The City owns the line from the water main to the meter. The homeowner owns the line from the meter to the building.
Redwood City reports no lead service lines on either side, after inspecting the customer side from 2021 through October 2025.
Pipe material decides the repair: copper, plastic, brass, and galvanized each behave differently.
We locate the leak first, so the excavation is as small as possible.
Every repair is quoted upfront.
Signs Your Water Line Needs Repair
A service line leak does not always surface. These are the clues that bring people to us:
A wet or unusually green strip of lawn between the meter and the house
Water pooling in the meter box
The meter dial moves with every fixture turned off
Water pressure drops at every tap at once
A water bill that climbs without a change in use
The sound of running water near the foundation when nothing is on
One clue alone may have another cause. Two or more together usually point to the service line.
How We Find and Fix the Leak
Digging in the wrong place wastes money and lawn. Our process keeps the excavation small.
Confirm. We shut off every fixture and watch the meter. Then we close the house shutoff. If the meter still moves, the leak is between the meter and the house.
Locate. We use acoustic listening equipment and line tracing to pinpoint the leak along the buried run.
Identify. We confirm the pipe material at both ends and at the leak.
Quote. You get an upfront price for a section repair or, if the pipe is failing along its length, for a full line replacement.
Repair. We expose the leak, cut out the damaged section, and install a matching repair. On a replacement, we run new pipe from the meter to the house shutoff.
Test. We pressurize the line, check every joint, flush air out through the fixtures, and backfill.
Repair or Replace the Whole Line?
A single leak on a sound pipe is a repair. A pipe that is failing everywhere is a replacement. These signs point to replacement:
Galvanized pipe with heavy internal corrosion
A second or third leak on the same line in a few years
Low pressure that persists after the leak is fixed
A line that has been patched in several places already
About 40 percent of Redwood City homes were built before 1960, according to Census data. Many of those service lines have been repaired at least once already. We will show you what we find so you can decide with full information.
Water Quality and Your Pipe
The City’s 2025 water quality report gives useful context. Water reaches homes with a pH averaging 9.36 and a chloramine disinfectant residual. In 2024 tap sampling, 0 of 30 homes exceeded the action level for lead or copper. Those numbers describe the water, not the condition of any one line, which is why we inspect each pipe directly.
Protecting the Line After a Repair
A repaired line lasts longer when the conditions that damaged it are dealt with too:
Roots. Trees and large shrubs planted over the service line can crush or crack it. We note any that sit close to the run.
Shallow cover. A line buried too shallow can be damaged by digging or vehicle loads. We bring repaired sections back to proper depth.
Pressure. Very high house pressure strains every joint. We read it during the repair and tell you if a regulator needs attention.
The shutoff. A main shutoff that will not close makes every future repair harder. We test it and replace it if it is seized.
Who to Call About the Meter
If the leak is on the street side of the meter or inside the meter box connection, that is the utility’s side. Most of Redwood City is served by the City’s water system, and some addresses are served by Cal Water. Your water bill shows which. We help you sort out the boundary before any work begins.
When the leak is on your side but the source is hard to find, our leak detection service in Redwood City uses the same equipment to trace it inside walls and under slabs.

Water Line Repair in Redwood City, CA: FAQs
Who is responsible for the water line at my Redwood City home?
The City is responsible from the water main to the meter. The homeowner is responsible from the meter to the building. Leaks on your side are a private repair.
Do Redwood City homes have lead water service lines?
The City reports no lead found on the city-owned side, and its inspection of the customer-owned side from 2021 through October 2025 found no lead service lines. We still confirm material at your home before repairing.
How do I tell what my water line is made of?
Look at the pipe where it enters the house or at the meter. The City publishes a guide showing plastic, copper, brass, galvanized, and lead lines. If you are unsure, we identify it on the visit.
Can you repair just the leaking section?
Yes, when the rest of the pipe is sound. Copper and plastic lines often take a section repair well. Galvanized lines usually need replacement because corrosion runs the full length.
My Redwood City water bill jumped. Is it the service line?
It might be. A leak between the meter and the house shows up on the meter even with every fixture off. We test the meter first, then locate the leak if the line is losing water.
Will you need to dig up my driveway?
Not always. We pinpoint the leak before we dig, and on a replacement we look at routes that avoid hardscape when the layout allows.
Have you lost water pressure? Maybe you noticed that the ground has a constant puddle. We work with clients that are both on city water as well as having wells. There are several reasons for broken water lines such as ground movement, freezing, or just getting old. Over time your water line outside will eventually give way and will need to be replaced. Finding the proper repair service is important in getting that water line fixed. If you have a water line underground, as many of them are, we will need to bring in some heavy equipment to dig into the source of the problem at times. Most times, however, we have a solution that doesn’t require any digging. This modern-day style of plumbing allows you to save money. Should you simply have no water coming into the home, this could mean there is more of a problem than just the line. It could be a dried-up well. No worries, we are pipe repairing professionals and will test that before we reach any conclusions.

What Your Redwood City Service Line Is Made Of, and Why It Matters
Before we repair a water line, we need to know what it is. Redwood City has done much of that groundwork.
According to the City of Redwood City water quality page, no lead was found on the city-owned side of service lines, from the main to the meter. The City also inspected the customer-owned side, from the meter to the building, from 2021 through October 2025 and found no lead service lines. The same page publishes an identification guide for plastic, copper, brass, galvanized, and lead service lines.
That leaves the question of which of the other materials you have. It matters because each one fails differently:
Copper tends to develop a pinhole or a cracked joint at one spot. A section repair often holds well.
Plastic usually fails at a fitting, or where a rock or root has pressed on it. A repair coupling or short section works.
Brass fittings and nipples can wear at threads and connections near the meter.
Galvanized steel corrodes from the inside out. A leak at one spot often means the rest of the pipe is thin too, so replacement is usually the sound choice.
We at Works Plumbing check the pipe at the meter and at the house entry, using the same visual cues the City’s guide describes. That tells us whether a spot repair will last or whether the line has reached the end of its life.
We’ve earned our reputation one happy homeowner at a time.
“Thank you again for another job well done, and thank you for responding right away. I will continue to recommend Works Plumbing because they respond right away and get the job done efficiently.”
