One slow fixture usually means a clog in that fixture’s branch line.
Several drains backing up together usually means the main line or lateral.
Your lines inside the house and the upper lateral are yours to maintain. The public sewer beyond them belongs to the sewer agency.
In Redwood Shores, the public side includes city pump stations, which changes how we read a street-wide backup.
Is It One Drain or the Whole House?
Start with a quick check. It tells you how urgent the problem is.
Probably a single fixture:
Only the bathroom sink is slow.
The tub drains slowly, but the toilet and sinks are fine.
The kitchen sink holds water while every other drain works.
Probably the main line:
The toilet gurgles when the washer drains.
Water rises in the tub when someone flushes.
The lowest drain in the house overflows first.
You notice a sewage smell near a floor drain or outdoor cleanout.
If it looks like the main line, stop running water. Every load of laundry and every shower adds to the backup. Then call us for same-day service.
Drain Cleaning in Redwood City, CA: Our Process
Every call follows the same order, so you always know what comes next.
Ask where it started. Which drain went first and what was running at the time narrows the search quickly.
Find access. We use the nearest cleanout, a fixture trap, or a roof vent, depending on where the clog sits.
Clear the line. A drain cable handles most hair, soap, and paper clogs.
Recommend jetting only when it fits. Thick grease or packed roots may call for hydro jetting in Redwood City instead of a cable.
Test the flow. We run water through the cleared line before we call the job done.
You approve the price before step 3. Nothing else gets added without your say.
When a Clog Becomes an Emergency
Some backups should not wait for a scheduled visit. Call right away if:
Sewage comes up through a tub, shower, or floor drain.
A toilet overflows when another fixture drains.
Water from a backup reaches flooring, walls, or a crawlspace.
Gurgling drains come with a sewage smell inside the house.
We offer 24/7 emergency service. Until we arrive, stop running water, keep people and pets away from any sewage, and skip chemical drain openers. They rarely clear a main line clog, and they make the pipe hazardous for anyone who has to open it.
What Usually Causes the Clog
Each part of the house has its usual suspects. Knowing them helps you prevent the next one.
Where the clog is
Common cause
What helps
Kitchen sink
Grease and food solids
Scrape plates, keep fats in the trash
Bathroom sink
Hair, toothpaste, soap
A strainer and a monthly hot water flush
Tub or shower
Hair and soap film
A hair catcher at the drain
Toilet
Wipes, too much paper
Flush only toilet paper
Main line
Roots, grease, or a damaged section
Cleaning, then a camera check
Root clogs deserve a note. The City advises keeping trees more than 10 feet from sewer lines and avoiding shallow root systems near your lateral. Roots that find a joint come back after cleaning, so we suggest a camera look when roots show up on the cable.
After the Line Is Clear
Clearing restores flow. It does not always explain why the clog formed. When a main line clogs more than once, or when the cable brings back roots or pieces of pipe, we suggest a sewer camera inspection in Redwood City. The footage shows whether the line is intact or whether a crack, sag, or root entry will keep causing trouble.
If the camera finds damage, you get repair options and prices before anything is scheduled. If it shows a sound pipe, cleaning was the whole job.
Which Sewer Agency Serves Your Address?
Most Redwood City homes are on City sewer. Some are served by San Mateo County through the Fair Oaks Sewer Maintenance District, which covers part of Redwood City along with North Fair Oaks and Sequoia Tract.
Your sewer bill tells you which agency handles your public main. That matters when the problem turns out to be past your property line. Inside the line, our work is the same either way.

Drain Cleaning FAQs for Redwood City
Will the City clear a clog in my sewer line?
Not on the private side. The City’s sewer plan puts the upper private lateral on the property owner, and the plumbing inside your home is private too. City crews handle the public mains.
I live in Redwood Shores. Do the pump stations affect my drains?
Not in day-to-day use. Your house drains by gravity to the public main like any other home. The pump stations are part of the City’s system beyond that point. A backup that hits several neighbors at once is worth reporting to the City.
How do I know if my home is on City or County sewer?
Check your sewer bill. Some addresses are served by San Mateo County through the Fair Oaks Sewer Maintenance District instead of the City. Our drain cleaning is the same either way.
Why does my kitchen drain keep clogging?
Grease is the usual reason. It goes down warm, cools in the pipe, and traps food solids. Clearing the line fixes today’s clog, and keeping fats out of the sink prevents the next one.
Do I need a camera inspection every time a drain clogs?
No. A single sink or tub clog rarely needs one. We suggest a camera when the main line clogs repeatedly or the cable brings back roots or pipe fragments.
Can roots from my yard trees clog my drain line?
Yes. Roots look for water at pipe joints. The City recommends planting trees more than 10 feet from sewer lines, which is good guidance when you plan new landscaping.
The most common residential plumbing problem in the San Francisco & Peninsula area is a clogged drain. Fortunately, most clogs occur in the trap. In fact, that’s the trap (also known as the p-trap) is supposed to do. It gives your household drains a place to collect debris in a location that’s easily accessed and cleaned. On rare occasions, sink stoppers can get shift due to pressure, and pipes under the sink or in a wall can clog or leak.

Redwood Shores Runs on Pumps: Where Your Line Ends
Most people picture a sewer as a pipe that runs downhill from the house to the treatment plant. Redwood Shores adds another layer. The City’s 2025 Sewer System Management Plan lists a separate Redwood Shores network with 31 miles of gravity sewer, about 7 miles of force main, and 26 city-owned pump stations. Pump stations collect wastewater and push it through force mains, which are pressurized pipes.
The neighborhood sits on former Bay marsh, and much of it is below high tide. None of that changes the plumbing on your lot. Your fixtures and the upper lateral still drain by gravity to the public main. The same plan states that the property owner is responsible for installation, maintenance, and repair of the upper private lateral. The mains, pump stations, and force mains belong to the City.
That split guides how we diagnose a Redwood Shores backup:
One slow fixture is a clog in your own branch line, and we clear it.
Several fixtures backing up at once points to your main line or lateral, which is also ours to clear.
If neighbors on the same street back up at the same time, the public side becomes the first suspect. The City should hear about it before anyone runs a cable down a private line.
What leaves your drain still matters past the property line. Grease and wipes travel on into a system that depends on pumps.
We’ve earned our reputation one happy homeowner at a time.
