Sewage backing up into a shower, a patch of lawn that stays green and smells, drains across the house slowing together. Those point at the main line rather than a fixture. We locate the fault, then repair or replace it across Pacifica, San Francisco, and Burlingame, trenchless where the line allows.

Sewer Line Repair and Replacement in Pacifica, San Francisco and Burlingame
When several fixtures slow at once, or waste appears in the lowest drain in the house, the problem is downstream of all of them. That is the main line or the lateral out to the sewer, and on the older housing stock here it is usually clay or cast iron, both of which have a finite life. Clay fails at its joints, which is where roots get in. Cast iron corrodes from inside until the bottom of the pipe scales over or gives out entirely.
Getting the diagnosis right is worth real money, because the repair options are so different in cost. A single failed joint can often be spot lined for a fraction of a replacement. A length of pipe with several defects but sound alignment can be lined end to end. A collapsed section needs bursting or excavation. Quoting any of those without cameraing and locating the line first is guesswork, and the guess is never in your favour.
So we camera, locate, and put the options in front of you with prices, including what the excavation alternative would cost so you can see the comparison. Book a free estimate any time, no obligation.
What’s included
Main line and sewer lateral repair
Full line replacement, trenchless or open-cut
Spot repair of single failed joints
Camera survey and defect location
Root intrusion repair and sealing
Cleanout installation and access work
How the job goes
We camera and locate the line, identify every defect and its depth, then price spot repair, lining, bursting, and excavation wherever each is viable.
You approve the price, and our licensed tech does the work from a fully stocked truck, so most jobs finish in a single visit without a parts run.
We complete the repair, camera the finished run so you can see it, test flow under load, and restore the ground we opened.
I had a backed up kitchen drain and David from Works Plumbing came out and cleared the line in a matter of minutes. Very professional and very knowledgeable. Definitely recommend!

Why homeowners choose Works
Every sewer line repair comes with upfront pricing, licensed and background-checked technicians, and a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Works Plumbing holds California contractor license #982663, carries full bonding and insurance, and holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.
We are a plumbing-only shop, which means the tech at your door has spent years on this exact work rather than splitting time across three trades. Our crews are drug tested as well as background checked, and dispatch is staffed by real people around the clock. No surprises, no commission-driven upsells, no pressure, ever.
Pro tip
Find out whether your city holds the homeowner responsible for the lateral all the way to the main, because on much of the Peninsula it does, including the section under the street. It changes the scope and the cost of a replacement significantly, and it is worth knowing before you get a quote rather than after. Any decent contractor will tell you where the responsibility line sits in your jurisdiction.

How do I know the problem is the sewer line and not a drain?
The pattern gives it away. A single slow fixture is local to that fixture. Several fixtures slowing together, waste backing up into the lowest drain in the house such as a ground floor shower, gurgling from a toilet when the washing machine drains, or a persistently soggy sweet-smelling patch of lawn all point downstream to the main line. If more than one fixture is involved, the main line is where we look first.
Can you repair just the broken section?
Frequently yes, and it is the first thing we check. Where the camera shows one failed joint or a short defect in otherwise sound pipe, a spot repair or spot liner addresses it at a fraction of full replacement cost. What we will not do is spot repair a line the camera shows failing in several places, because you would be back within a year or two having spent money that should have gone toward the real fix.
Do I need a permit?
For sewer lateral repair or replacement, generally yes, and requirements differ between Pacifica, San Francisco, Burlingame, and the smaller Peninsula cities. Some jurisdictions also require a compliance test on the lateral at point of sale. We handle the permitting as part of the job and tell you upfront what your city requires, because an unpermitted sewer replacement is a problem that surfaces later at the worst time.
How long will we be without usable drains?
Less time than most people expect. A spot repair or a lining job is usually a single day, and on lining work the line is typically back in service the same afternoon once the resin has cured. A full replacement runs one to three days depending on length, depth, and whether the run crosses a driveway or the street. We tell you each morning what will be offline and for how long.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Works Plumbing holds California contractor license #982663, carries full bonding and liability insurance, and is accredited with an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. Every technician who comes to your door is background checked and drug tested, and arrives in a marked Works van in uniform. If you want to verify the license before booking, you can look it up on the California Contractors State License Board website.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. Plumbing problems do not wait for payday, so you can spread the cost over 12, 24, or 60 months through our financing partners. Approval takes about 60 seconds, runs on a soft credit check that does not affect your score, and there is no prepayment penalty if you clear it early. Qualifying plans include 0% APR for the first 12 months.
