Most drips come from a worn cartridge, washer, or O-ring, and most are repairable.
Redwood City lists current flow limits for new faucets: 1.2 gpm for bathroom sinks and 1.8 gpm for kitchens.
A new faucet or aerator built to those limits feels different from an older one, and that is normal.
We repair first and replace only when parts are gone or the body is damaged.
What Kind of Faucet Do You Have?
The repair depends on what is inside. There are four common designs:
Compression. Two handles that you tighten to shut off. Drips usually mean a worn washer or seat.
Cartridge. One or two handles that move smoothly. A drip usually means a worn cartridge or its O-rings.
Ball. A single handle on a rounded cap, common in older kitchens. Springs and seals wear out.
Ceramic disc. A single lever over a wide cylinder. Leaks usually come from the seals below the discs.
You do not need to know which you have. We identify it on the visit and match the part to the brand and model.
Symptoms and What They Usually Mean
What you see
Likely cause
Drip from the spout
Worn washer, seat, cartridge, or seals
Water around the base
Worn O-rings or a loose base nut
Leak under the sink
Supply line, shutoff valve, or drain connection
Weak or uneven flow
Clogged aerator or cartridge
Stiff or loose handle
Worn cartridge or stem
Hot and cold mixed wrong
Cartridge installed incorrectly or worn
If water is pooling inside the cabinet, turn off the shutoff valves under the sink and call us. Water inside a cabinet can damage the floor below before you notice it.
Repair or Replace?
We repair when the faucet body is sound and parts are available. Typical repairs include:
Replacing washers, seats, and O-rings
Replacing a cartridge or ceramic disc assembly
Cleaning or replacing the aerator
Tightening or resealing the base
Replacing supply lines and worn shutoff valves
Replacement makes sense when the body is cracked or corroded, parts for the model are no longer made, or the finish has worn through. If you are replacing, we help you choose a faucet that fits the sink holes and meets the current flow limits.
Laundry and Outdoor Faucets Count Too
We repair more than kitchen and bath faucets. Laundry sink faucets and outdoor hose bibs wear the same way:
A hose bib that drips at the spout usually needs a new washer or valve.
One that leaks at the handle needs new packing or a new stem.
One that leaks inside the wall while the hose is running needs prompt attention, because the water goes where you cannot see it.
Laundry faucets handle hot water and heavy use, so their washers and cartridges can wear sooner than the ones in a guest bath. Ask us to check them on the same visit.
Shutoff Valves in Older Redwood City Homes
About 40 percent of Redwood City’s housing units were built before 1960, according to Census estimates. In those homes, the shutoff valves under the sink may be as old as the faucet.
An old shutoff that will not close, or that drips once it is turned, makes every faucet repair harder. We test the valves before we start, and we tell you if one should be replaced while the water is already off.
Water Quality and Your Faucets
Redwood City water is soft, with 2025 hardness averaging 62 ppm, so heavy scale is uncommon. It is disinfected with chloramine and runs on the alkaline side. Light white specks at an aerator are usually a cleaning job.
The City’s 2024 lead and copper sampling found 0 of 30 tap samples above either action level. If you have questions about older fixtures in your home, we can talk through replacement options.

Faucet Repair FAQs for Redwood City
Why does my new bathroom faucet feel weaker than the old one?
Redwood City’s fixture handout lists a current limit of 1.2 gpm at 60 psi for bathroom faucets. A new faucet built to that limit puts out less water than many older ones. If flow seems lower than the rating, we check the aerator and shutoff valve.
What flow limit applies to a new kitchen faucet in Redwood City?
The City’s handout lists 1.8 gpm at 60 psi for kitchen faucets. We fit replacement faucets and aerators that meet it.
Does remodeling a pre-1994 Redwood City home affect my faucets?
It can. The City’s handout says buildings finaled before January 1, 1994 that undergo permitted alterations, additions, or improvements must replace non-compliant fixtures, including interior faucets over 2.2 gpm. We confirm details with the City for your project.
Can you repair an old two-handle faucet in a 1950s Redwood City home?
Often, yes. Compression faucets use washers and seats that are easy to replace. If the body is corroded or parts are gone, we discuss replacement.
Is the white crust on my aerator hard water?
Redwood City water is soft, averaging 62 ppm hardness in 2025, so buildup is usually light. Cleaning or replacing the aerator takes care of it.
Should I replace the shutoff valves when you fix my faucet?
If they stick, leak, or will not close fully, yes. In older Redwood City homes we check them first, since a failed shutoff makes future repairs harder.

Many faucet calls in Redwood City end with a new aerator or a new faucet, so it helps to know the rules those parts are built to. The City’s Non-compliant Fixture Rule handout, revised January 2026, lists the current flow limits:
Fixture
Current limit
Bathroom (lavatory) faucet
1.2 gpm at 60 psi
Kitchen faucet
1.8 gpm at 60 psi
The same handout defines an interior faucet that flows more than 2.2 gpm as non-compliant.
Here is what that means at your sink. The aerator at the tip of the spout sets most of the flow. When we replace an aerator or a whole faucet, we fit parts built to the current limits. A bathroom faucet at 1.2 gpm will feel softer than a decades-old one, especially if the old one had lost its aerator. That softer stream is the design, not a defect.
It also changes how we diagnose a weak faucet. Before we blame a new low-flow part, we check for a clogged aerator, a partly closed shutoff valve, or a worn cartridge. If those are clear and the flow matches the rating, the faucet is working as built.
One more point for older homes. The handout explains that residential buildings finaled before January 1, 1994 that undergo permitted alterations, additions, or improvements must replace non-compliant fixtures. If your faucet work is part of a permitted project, we confirm with the City what must be replaced.
We’ve earned our reputation one happy homeowner at a time.
