A jetter sends water at high pressure through a hose and nozzle that cuts and flushes debris back toward the cleanout. Request a hydro jetting quote and we will tell you whether jetting fits your line before any work starts.
The short version
Jetting cleans the full diameter of the pipe. A cable opens a path through the middle.
It is the right tool for packed roots, thick grease, and recurring main line clogs.
Many Redwood City trees are protected by ordinance, so clearing roots from inside the pipe avoids digging near them.
We check the pipe with a camera so we know the line can take jetting.
When Jetting Beats a Drain Cable
A cable is fast and inexpensive, and for a single hair or paper clog it is all you need. Jetting earns its place when:
The same main line clog returns after cabling.
Roots have grown through several joints.
Grease has coated a kitchen line or lateral wall to wall.
Sludge and scale have narrowed an older line.
A camera inspection needs a clean pipe to show the true condition.
Camera first. We look inside to confirm what is causing the blockage and whether the pipe is sound enough to jet.
Choose the access point. A cleanout is the usual entry. We tell you if your home does not have a usable one.
Jet the line. We work the nozzle through the pipe, cutting roots and flushing grease and debris downstream.
Camera again. A second look confirms the walls are clean and shows any cracks or offsets the debris was hiding.
Report. You see the before and after footage, and we explain any repair the camera points to.
You approve an upfront price before step 3.
Is Jetting Safe for an Older Pipe?
About 40 percent of Redwood City’s housing units were built before 1960, according to Census estimates, and the 1950s is the largest single decade. Older laterals deserve a careful look before jetting.
That is why the camera goes in first. If the pipe is cracked, collapsed, or badly offset, high pressure water is the wrong tool, and we tell you so. In that case we discuss repair, including trenchless options, before anything else.
Grease Lines and Kitchen Branches
Roots are not the only thing jetting removes. Grease that goes down a kitchen sink cools and sticks to the pipe, and every meal adds a layer. A cable pokes a hole through it. Jetting strips it from the walls.
The City runs into the same problem in public mains. Its 2025 sewer plan assigns a truck-mounted rodder to areas with heavy grease, known root problems, or heavily tree-lined streets. Your private line faces the same culprits on a smaller scale.
Getting Ready for a Jetting Visit
A little preparation helps the visit go smoothly:
Clear a path to the outdoor cleanout and any indoor access point.
Move cars, planters, or bins that sit over the cleanout box.
Hold off on laundry, the dishwasher, and showers while the line is being cleaned.
Keep children and pets away from the work area.
After jetting, use your plumbing normally. If the camera showed roots, ask us about a follow-up inspection so you can see whether regrowth starts at the same joints. A planned check is easier to schedule than an emergency backup, and it tells you whether cleaning is keeping up or a repair would cost less over time.
Who Clears Which Part of the Sewer
Redwood City splits the sewer at the property line. The City handles the lower lateral, from the property-line cleanout to the main, and crews will snake it only for homes that have a cleanout at the property line. Everything on your side of that line, including the cleanout itself, is private plumbing. That is the part we jet.
Some addresses are on San Mateo County sewer through the Fair Oaks Sewer Maintenance District instead of the City. Your sewer bill shows which agency serves you.
Why Redwood City Homeowners Call Works Plumbing
Works Plumbing has been family owned and operated since 2009, based in Pacifica and working throughout the Peninsula. With every jetting job you get:
Do I need a tree permit to clear roots from my sewer line?
Jetting works inside the pipe and does not involve digging around the tree. If any part of the job would touch a tree protected by Redwood City’s ordinances, we confirm with the City before that work starts.
Will roots come back after jetting?
They can. Jetting removes the roots, but the joint they entered through is still there. A camera shows whether the entry point is minor or a crack that calls for repair.
Will Redwood City jet my lateral for me?
Not the private side. City crews service the lower lateral and snake it only for homes with a property-line cleanout. The line from your house to that cleanout is yours to maintain.
Is hydro jetting safe for an older Redwood City home?
Usually, when the pipe is sound. Many homes in the city were built before 1960, so we run a camera first. If the pipe is cracked or collapsed, we recommend repair instead.
My home is on County sewer. Can you still jet my line?
Yes. Some Redwood City addresses are served by the Fair Oaks Sewer Maintenance District. The private line on your property is cleaned the same way either way.
How do I keep roots out after jetting?
Follow the City’s guidance: keep shallow-rooted plants away from your lateral and plant new trees more than 10 feet from sewer lines. Periodic camera checks catch regrowth early.
Hydro jetting is a plumbing service that cleans out sluggish or obstructed sewage pipes. Keeping your plumbing pipes clean and free of clogs is essential. When you start to notice that the drains and sewer lines aren’t working as well as they used to, the best thing is to call a specialist to investigate the problem and recommend solutions. They could recommend hydro jetting the plumbing line or, as mentioned earlier, recommend the most common way (and most traditional way), an old fashioned drain snaking. But instead of sticking a snake tool down the drain, hydro jetting uses a high-pressure hose with a specialized nozzle that produces enough force to clear the clogged drain. It puts more power behind the process.

Protected Trees and Roots in a Redwood City Lateral
Roots are the most common reason we jet a sewer line, and in Redwood City the tree above the pipe often has legal protection. The City’s tree permit rules cover two groups. Street trees on public property fall under the Street Tree Ordinance, Municipal Code Chapter 29, Article VI. Private trees fall under the Tree Preservation Ordinance, Chapter 35, once they measure over 38 inches in circumference, or 12 inches in diameter, between 6 and 36 inches above the ground.
A permit is required for “any act upon a tree protected by these ordinances.” The City lists fines of $500 per tree for illegal pruning, and $500 per tree plus a replacement tree for illegal removal.
That matters when roots have found your lateral. Digging a trench to reach a root-packed pipe can put a crew inside a protected tree’s root zone. Jetting works from inside the pipe instead. We enter through a cleanout, cut the roots that have grown through the joints, and flush them out, with no excavation around the trunk.
The City’s sewer guidance points the same way. It advises against shallow root systems near a lateral and recommends planting trees more than 10 feet from sewer lines.
If the camera then shows a broken pipe rather than a root-filled one, any repair that means digging near a protected tree starts with the City. We confirm what is allowed before anyone picks up a shovel.
We’ve earned our reputation one happy homeowner at a time.
