Signs of a Gas Line Problem
Natural gas has an added odor so leaks can be noticed. Other warning signs include:
A rotten egg or sulfur smell near an appliance, the meter, or a wall
A hissing or whistling sound near gas piping
Bubbles in standing water or mud along a buried line
A patch of dead or dying plants over the path of a yard line
A pilot light that keeps going out or a burner flame that burns yellow instead of blue
Any of these deserves a call. A yellow flame or a pilot that will not stay lit can also be an appliance problem, and we check both.
What We Repair
Gas repairs fall into a few familiar groups:
Leaking fittings and joints. We locate the leak, then remake or replace the joint.
Flexible appliance connectors. Old or kinked connectors are replaced, not patched.
Shutoff valves. A valve that will not turn, or leaks at the stem, gets replaced.
Damaged sections of pipe. We replace the damaged run with new piping.
Yard lines. Buried lines to outbuildings, grills, or fire features are located and repaired.
We repair what failed and tell you if we see anything else that needs attention. We do not pad the job.
Our Repair Process
Make it safe. We confirm the gas is off at the meter or the nearest shutoff.
Find the leak. We test joints, valves, and connectors along the line until we pinpoint the source.
Quote. You approve an upfront price before any repair.
Repair. We replace the failed fitting, connector, valve, or section.
Test. We confirm the repair holds. Where the City requires an inspection, we coordinate it.
Relight. Once gas is restored, we relight pilots and check appliance flames.
Before any repair, we confirm permit requirements with the City. For the meter reconnection test, the handout states a plumbing permit is required.
Older Homes and Gas Piping
About 40 percent of Redwood City’s housing units were built before 1960, and the 1950s is the single largest decade, according to Census estimates. Many of those homes have had furnaces, water heaters, and ranges replaced several times, and each change added or altered a connection.
That history is why we test the whole run we work on, not just the fitting that failed. When an appliance swap is part of the job, such as water heater installation in Redwood City, we check the gas connection to the new unit before we leave.
Getting a Long-Idle Home Ready for the Test
Vacant homes and long remodels are the usual reason a Redwood City meter stays off past six months. If that describes your house, a little preparation keeps the process moving.
Before we arrive:
Find out when the meter was removed or locked off. The six-month mark decides whether the test applies.
Clear a path to the meter, the water heater, the furnace, and the range.
List every gas appliance in the house, including outdoor ones such as a grill line, fire pit, or pool heater.
Note any appliance that was removed during the remodel. Its old connection still has to be capped.
What we do on the visit:
Walk the gas piping from the meter to each appliance connection.
Repair or cap anything that would make the system fail the test.
Pull the plumbing permit the handout requires and set the system up for the City inspector.
A remodel that added a new gas branch is a slightly different case. The handout calls for a pressure test on new branches, so we plan the test around the new work as well as the existing piping.
Once the inspector signs off, the City sends the authorization to Pacific Gas and Electric. From there, you schedule the meter with the utility, and we can return to relight pilots and check each appliance.

Gas Line Repair FAQs for Redwood City
Our gas meter was removed more than six months ago. Can Pacific Gas and Electric just turn it back on?
No. Under the City’s Gas Pipe Testing handout, Pacific Gas and Electric requires a pressure test before it will set or reconnect a meter that has been off more than six months. A plumbing permit is required, and the City inspects the test.
Who tells Pacific Gas and Electric that our gas line passed the test?
The City does. When the inspection passes, Redwood City’s Inspection Division sends Pacific Gas and Electric the connection authorization automatically.
What does the Redwood City pressure test involve?
The handout calls for at least 10 psi held for at least 15 minutes, read on a gauge in 1/10 lb increments. We prepare the system and set up the test for the inspector.
Does every gas repair need a full pressure test?
Not always. The City handout says new branches need a pressure test, while short repair sections may be soap-tested. We confirm what applies to your job with the City.
Do I need a permit to repair a gas line in Redwood City?
For the meter reconnection test, yes, the handout requires a plumbing permit. For other repairs, we confirm permit requirements with the City before work starts.
We remodeled and the gas has been off since. What happens before we move back in?
If the meter has been off more than six months, the City’s pressure test applies before the meter is reset. We check the piping, cap any connections left from removed appliances, and prepare the system for the City inspection.

When the Meter Has Been Off: Redwood City’s Gas Pressure Test
Some gas line repairs in Redwood City come with a test that has nothing to do with the original leak. The City’s Gas Pipe Testing handout, revised January 2026, explains it. After a gas meter has been disconnected for more than six months, for any reason, Pacific Gas and Electric requires a pressure test before it will set or reconnect the meter.
That covers more homes than people expect. A house that sat empty, a long remodel, or a meter pulled after a leak and never reset all qualify.
The handout sets the terms:
A plumbing permit is required.
The system is tested at no less than 10 psi for at least 15 minutes (CPC 1213.3).
The gauge must read in 1/10 lb increments, so a small drop shows.
New branches need a pressure test. Short repair sections may be soap-tested.
When the inspection passes, the City’s Inspection Division sends Pacific Gas and Electric the connection authorization automatically.
This is where repair and testing meet. Piping that has sat idle can hide loose fittings, damaged sections, or old branches that were never capped. A failed test sends everyone back to hunt for the leak. So we look for those problems first, repair them, and then set up the test for the City inspector. After sign-off, the City notifies Pacific Gas and Electric and you schedule the meter.
We’ve earned our reputation one happy homeowner at a time.
