Single-fixture clogs are usually cleared at the fixture or its branch line.
Several fixtures backing up at once points to the main line or lateral.
Before cutting roots or a hard blockage in a lateral, we run a camera.
You get the cause and an upfront price before we start.
Clogs We Clear
Location
Common causes
Usual approach
Kitchen sink
Grease, food scraps, disposal waste
Clear the trap and branch line, flush
Bathroom sink
Hair, soap, toothpaste residue
Pull and clean the stopper and trap, snake the branch
Tub and shower
Hair and soap
Snake through the drain or overflow
Toilet
Wipes, paper, foreign objects
Toilet auger, then check the line beyond
Laundry
Lint and fabric fibers
Clear the standpipe and branch
Main line or lateral
Roots, grease, debris, sags, breaks
Camera, then cable or water jetting
Signs the Clog Is in the Main Line
Toilets gurgle when a sink or washer drains
Water backs up in a tub or shower when a toilet is flushed
More than one fixture is slow at the same time
Sewage odor from floor drains
Water standing in the cleanout
When those signs show up, the problem is downstream of the individual fixtures, and clearing one sink will not fix it.
Your Lateral and the City’s Lateral
Palo Alto’s Rule 23 splits the sewer lateral. Where an accessible City Sewer Cleanout exists, usually in the planting strip, the City owns the section from the main up to and including that cleanout. The owner is responsible for the section from the cleanout to the house.
When we clear a main line, we note where the blockage sits. If it is in the City’s section, we tell you, so the City can clear its portion. Rule 23 also gives City and utility personnel the right to access the entire lateral for the cross bore inspection program, so a crew may already have filmed yours.
Our Drain Cleaning Process
Ask and observe. Which fixtures are slow, since when, and what has been tried.
Start at the right access point. A fixture, a cleanout, or a roof vent, depending on where the clog is.
Camera on laterals. For hard, recurring, or unfilmed lateral blockages, we look before cutting.
Clear. Cable machine for most clogs; water jetting for grease and heavy root buildup.
Verify. We run water through the line and, on laterals, film the cleared pipe.
Explain. You see what caused the clog and what would keep it from returning.
Kitchen Lines and Grease
Kitchen drains clog differently from bathroom drains. Grease, oil, and fine food solids cool and stick to the pipe wall, and the opening narrows until a heavy holiday meal or a full dishwasher finishes the job.
A cable punches a hole through that buildup, and the drain runs again. But the coating on the walls is still there. For a kitchen branch that clogs repeatedly, we clear it and then recommend jetting if the buildup is heavy, so the pipe is cleaned back to its full size.
Lower Floors and Floor Drains
Fixtures at the lowest level of a house are the first to show a main line problem. A basement shower, a ground-floor bathroom, or a laundry floor drain will back up before anything upstairs does.
If your lowest drains are the ones backing up, we start at the main cleanout rather than at the fixture. We also check whether a backwater valve protects those fixtures and whether it is working.
When Cleaning Is Not Enough
Some clogs come back because the pipe itself has a problem. A belly that holds water, an offset joint, or a crack that lets roots in will keep catching debris.
For heavy grease or root buildup, hydro jetting in Palo Alto scours the pipe wall instead of punching a hole through the blockage. When the pipe is damaged, our camera footage shows where, and we price repair options so you can decide.
Keep Drains Clear Between Visits
Wipe greasy pans before washing them.
Use strainers in tubs, showers, and kitchen sinks.
Flush only toilet paper.
Run plenty of water with the disposal.
Note where your cleanout is, and keep it uncovered and reachable.

Cameras used on lateral work before cutting
Clear explanation of which section of the lateral is yours
A cross bore is a gas line accidentally bored through a sewer lateral during installation. The City of Palo Alto Utilities is inspecting laterals citywide to find them, and says a crossbore must be repaired immediately. We camera hard lateral blockages before cutting for that reason.
The City inspected my lateral for cross bores. Does that mean it is clear?
The City’s inspection looks for gas lines inside the sewer lateral. It is not a drain cleaning service. Roots, grease, and sags can still cause clogs, and we can review any footage you have.
Who clears a sewer backup in Palo Alto, me or the City?
It depends on where the blockage is. Under Rule 23, the City clears its section of the lateral, and the owner is responsible for stoppages in the private section. We locate the blockage and tell you which side it is on.
Why do my drains keep clogging after cleaning?
Repeated clogs usually mean a pipe problem such as roots, a sag, or an offset joint. A camera inspection shows the cause so the fix addresses it rather than the symptom.
What should I do if sewage backs up into my house?
Stop running water in the house so the backup does not get worse. Keep people away from the affected area and call us. If the backup is in the City’s section, the City of Palo Alto Utilities clears it.
Do you use chemical drain cleaners?
We clear drains mechanically with augers, cables, and water jetting. That removes the blockage instead of leaving chemicals sitting in the pipe.

The most common residential plumbing problem in the San Francisco & Peninsula area is a clogged drain. Fortunately, most clogs occur in the trap. In fact, that’s the trap (also known as the p-trap) is supposed to do. It gives your household drains a place to collect debris in a location that’s easily accessed and cleaned. On rare occasions, sink stoppers can get shift due to pressure, and pipes under the sink or in a wall can clog or leak.

A cross bore is a gas line that was accidentally bored through a sewer lateral when the gas line was installed. The gas pipe sits inside the sewer pipe, and nobody knows it is there until something hits it.
The City of Palo Alto Utilities is looking for them. Its Crossbore Phase IV-A program inspects private and public sewer laterals citywide “to verify natural gas pipelines were not installed within the sanitary sewer lateral service.” The phase covers 963 laterals, began in September 2024, and uses City crews with camera inspection. The City’s position is clear: a crossbore “must be repaired immediately.”
Why should a drain cleaner care? A clogged lateral with a gas line through it often looks like a stubborn root or debris blockage. A cutting head spun hard into that obstruction could damage the gas line inside the sewer pipe.
So on lateral work, we do not start by forcing a cutter through a blockage we cannot see. We run a camera first when the clog is hard, recurring, or in a section that has never been filmed. If the footage shows anything that looks like a pipe crossing the lateral, we stop, keep the area safe, and contact the City of Palo Alto Utilities.
Most of the time the camera shows roots, grease, or a sag. Then we choose the right tool for what is actually there.
We’ve earned our reputation one happy homeowner at a time.
