In a city that protects its trees, there is a second advantage: the work happens inside the pipe, not in the soil around a protected tree.
Recurring backups? Schedule hydro jetting and we will clean the line and show you what caused them.
| Cable (snake) | Hydro jetting | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | A rotating cutter bores through the blockage | Pressurized water scours the full pipe wall |
| Roots | Cuts a path; roots fill back in | Cuts and flushes roots from the whole circumference |
| Grease | Pokes a hole; grease remains on the wall | Strips grease from the wall and carries it away |
| Best for | A single soft clog close to a fixture | Recurring clogs, roots, grease, long laterals |
| Limits | Leaves residue behind | Not for collapsed or badly broken pipe |

Jetting restores flow. It does not fix a cracked joint or a separated pipe. Roots that came in through a crack will come back through the same crack unless the opening is sealed or the section is replaced.
That is why the after-camera matters. If roots keep returning, a lining or replacement may be the lasting fix. Our trenchless pipe repair service in Palo Alto can renew a damaged lateral with little digging, which also helps near protected trees.
Roots are not the only problem. Kitchen grease coats the pipe wall and narrows it, and a cable leaves most of that coating behind. Jetting strips it off and carries it to the main.
Older sewer lines also collect scale and sediment. Jetting removes loose buildup, while the camera tells us whether the pipe wall is sound enough for regular cleaning.
Some lines clog on a predictable cycle. A lateral beside a mature street tree, or a kitchen line that sees a lot of cooking, tends to build up the same way each time.
For those homes, scheduled jetting can prevent the next backup instead of reacting to it. The camera record from each visit shows how fast roots or grease return, which helps you and us set a sensible interval rather than guessing.
Planned cleaning also gives you time to decide on a lasting repair. Many owners jet on a schedule while they budget for lining or replacing the damaged section.
A few things make the work go smoothly:
Under City of Palo Alto Utilities rules, the customer is responsible for clearing stoppages in the upper, private section of the lateral. The City owns the lower section only when a City sewer cleanout is present and accessible.
We tell you which section the problem is in. If the camera shows the issue in the City’s section, you can report it to the utility.

Can jetting remove roots from a protected oak without harming the tree?
Jetting works only inside the pipe. It cuts and flushes the roots that have grown into the lateral without any digging in the tree’s root zone. If a repair is later needed near a protected tree, we confirm requirements with the City first.
Which trees does Palo Alto protect?
Locally native species, including coast live oak and valley oak, at 11.5 inches in diameter or more; coast redwoods at 18 inches; most other mature trees at 15 inches; and all public and street trees.
Is hydro jetting safe for older Palo Alto sewer lines?
For most lines, yes. We camera the line first. If the pipe is collapsed or badly broken, we do not jet it and recommend a repair instead.
How often should a lateral near a big tree be jetted?
It depends on how fast roots return, which the camera shows. Some owners schedule regular cleaning; others choose to repair the entry points so cleaning is needed less.
Who pays to clear roots from my sewer lateral in Palo Alto?
The owner is responsible for stoppages in the upper, private lateral. The City of Palo Alto Utilities handles its lower section when a City cleanout is present and accessible.
Will jetting fix a line that keeps clogging?
It clears the line fully, which a cable does not. If clogs return because of cracks or offsets, the camera shows them so you can decide on a repair.
Roots and grease do not go away on their own. Request hydro jetting from Works Plumbing, and we will clean your line from the inside and show you exactly what we found.
Hydro jetting is a plumbing service that cleans out sluggish or obstructed sewage pipes. Keeping your plumbing pipes clean and free of clogs is essential. When you start to notice that the drains and sewer lines aren’t working as well as they used to, the best thing is to call a specialist to investigate the problem and recommend solutions. They could recommend hydro jetting the plumbing line or, as mentioned earlier, recommend the most common way (and most traditional way), an old fashioned drain snaking. But instead of sticking a snake tool down the drain, hydro jetting uses a high-pressure hose with a specialized nozzle that produces enough force to clear the clogged drain. It puts more power behind the process.

A look at real Works jobs around the Peninsula.
Palo Alto manages its urban forest partly through a tree ordinance. According to the City’s Tree Protection Ordinance information page, the ordinance sits in Municipal Code Title 8 and was updated effective May 1, 2024. It protects locally native species, such as coast live oak, valley oak, and big leaf maple, at 11.5 inches in trunk diameter or more. Coast redwoods are protected at 18 inches, and most other mature trees at 15 inches. All public and street trees are protected regardless of size.
Big trees need water, and a sewer lateral is a steady source. Fine roots find a loose joint or hairline crack, grow through it, and spread into a mat that catches paper and grease. The line slows, then backs up.
The City’s own sewer rules recognize the problem. Rule 23 bars vegetation in sewer easement areas, in part “to prevent tree roots from damaging” the collection system.
When the tree is protected, digging up the lateral to remove roots is a poor first choice. Hydro jetting cuts and flushes the roots from inside the pipe without touching the tree. We follow with a camera so you can see where the roots enter, and if a repair is needed near a protected tree, we confirm requirements with the City before any digging.
