Rooter work is the mechanical side of drain clearing: a cutting head driven down the line to cut through root mass and pull out what is blocking it. We run rooter service across Pacifica, San Francisco, and Burlingame, and we camera the line afterwards so you know whether the roots will be back.

Rooter Service in Pacifica, San Francisco and Burlingame
Roots do not break into healthy pipe. They find a joint that has shifted or a crack that already existed, and then they thrive, because a sewer line is a reliable supply of water and nutrients. That is why root blockages recur on an annual rhythm in the same house while the neighbour never has one. The tree is not the problem so much as the defect it found.
Rooter service cuts the mass out and restores full flow, and for many homes an annual or biennial cut is a perfectly reasonable maintenance decision, particularly where the alternative is excavating a line under a mature garden. What matters is knowing that is the deal you are in, rather than being surprised every winter.
So after cutting we camera the line and find the point of entry. Sometimes it is a single failed joint that can be spot repaired or lined. Sometimes it is a length of clay pipe with several. You will see the footage and get honest options: keep cutting on a schedule, line the section, or replace it. Book a free estimate any time, no obligation.
What’s included
Root cutting in main and branch sewer lines
Mechanical cabling of blocked drains
Camera inspection to locate the entry point
Recurring blockage diagnosis
Scheduled maintenance cutting
Spot repair and lining recommendations
How the job goes
We identify the blockage location and depth, select the right cutting head for the pipe material, then quote one flat price for the clearing.
You approve the price, and our licensed tech does the work from a fully stocked truck, so most jobs finish in a single visit without a parts run.
We cut the line clear, camera it to find where the roots entered, and give you the honest choice between scheduled cutting and repairing the defect.
I had a backed up kitchen drain and David from Works Plumbing came out and cleared the line in a matter of minutes. Very professional and very knowledgeable. Definitely recommend!

Why homeowners choose Works
Every rooter service comes with upfront pricing, licensed and background-checked technicians, and a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Works Plumbing holds California contractor license #982663, carries full bonding and insurance, and holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.
We are a plumbing-only shop, which means the tech at your door has spent years on this exact work rather than splitting time across three trades. Our crews are drug tested as well as background checked, and dispatch is staffed by real people around the clock. No surprises, no commission-driven upsells, no pressure, ever.
Pro tip
If your main line blocks at roughly the same time each year, that is roots, and the timing is not coincidence. Root growth surges with winter rain and the line offers water year round. Booking a cut before the wet season rather than during a backup is cheaper, quieter, and does not involve a sewage cleanup. Note the month it happened this year and book ahead of it next year.

Ready to get it fixed?
Upfront pricing, licensed techs, and a real human on the phone 24/7 across the Peninsula.
If the defect they came through is still there, yes, and usually within a year or two. Cutting removes the mass and restores flow but does nothing to the crack or open joint that let them in. That is not a reason to avoid cutting, plenty of homes manage the situation on a maintenance schedule for years. It is a reason to have the line cameraed so you know whether you are managing a recurring issue or looking at a repair.
Do I have to dig up my garden to fix it properly?
Often not. Where the pipe is otherwise sound and the problem is one joint, trenchless lining can seal the defect from inside with no excavation, and root intrusion at that point stops. Where a longer run of clay pipe has multiple failures, replacement may be the better spend, and even then trenchless methods can sometimes avoid a full trench. We will camera it first and tell you which options genuinely apply.
Is rooter service the same as hydro jetting?
No. Rooter work is mechanical, a rotating cutting head that shears through root mass and hard obstructions. Jetting is hydraulic, high-pressure water that strips grease and scale off the pipe wall. Roots need cutting, grease needs jetting, and using the wrong one wastes your money. On root jobs we often do both: cut the mass, then jet out the residue so the camera view is clear.
How quickly can you clear a blocked main line?
Same day in most cases, and we treat a fully blocked main as an emergency because there is nowhere for household waste to go. Dispatch runs 24/7. Most root cuts are done within a couple of hours of arriving. If the line is only slow rather than blocked, we can usually still get to you the same day.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Works Plumbing holds California contractor license #982663, carries full bonding and liability insurance, and is accredited with an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. Every technician who comes to your door is background checked and drug tested, and arrives in a marked Works van in uniform. If you want to verify the license before booking, you can look it up on the California Contractors State License Board website.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. Plumbing problems do not wait for payday, so you can spread the cost over 12, 24, or 60 months through our financing partners. Approval takes about 60 seconds, runs on a soft credit check that does not affect your score, and there is no prepayment penalty if you clear it early. Qualifying plans include 0% APR for the first 12 months.
