Water Softener Installation and Repair in Pacifica, San Francisco and Burlingame
Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, and its cost is cumulative rather than dramatic. It scales the inside of pipes and the heat exchanger of your water heater, which is why hard water areas see shorter appliance lives. It also means using noticeably more detergent and soap for the same result, and it leaves the film on glass and tile that no amount of cleaning fully removes.
A softener works by ion exchange, swapping the calcium and magnesium for sodium across a resin bed, then periodically regenerating that bed with brine. Sizing it properly is the whole game: undersize it and it regenerates constantly, wasting salt and water and wearing out early. Oversize it and you have paid for capacity you never use and the resin sits stale between regenerations.
So we test your water before recommending anything, size on measured hardness and household demand, and tell you where a whole-house softener is genuinely worth it against point-of-use treatment. Book a free estimate any time, no obligation.

How the job goes
We test your water for hardness and iron, work out household demand, then size the system and quote it against the alternatives.
You approve the price, and our licensed tech does the work from a fully stocked truck, so most jobs finish in a single visit without a parts run.
We install and program the regeneration cycle to your measured hardness, test softness at the tap, and show you how to maintain the brine tank.
Thank you again for another job well done, and thank you for responding right away. I will continue to recommend Works Plumbing because they respond right away and get the job done efficiently.

Why homeowners choose Works
Every softener installation comes with upfront pricing, licensed and background-checked technicians, and a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Works Plumbing holds California contractor license #982663, carries full bonding and insurance, and holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.
We are a plumbing-only shop, which means the tech at your door has spent years on this exact work rather than splitting time across three trades. Our crews are drug tested as well as background checked, and dispatch is staffed by real people around the clock. No surprises, no commission-driven upsells, no pressure, ever.
Pro tip
Check the brine tank once a month and keep the salt level above the water line, but do not fill it to the brim. Overfilling encourages the salt to bridge, forming a crust that leaves an air gap underneath, and once that happens the system draws no brine and quietly stops softening while appearing to work normally. Half to two thirds full is the right habit.

Ready to get it fixed?
Upfront pricing, licensed techs, and a real human on the phone 24/7 across the Peninsula.
Start with a test rather than a guess, and we will do one free as part of an estimate. The everyday signs are white scale on faucets and shower glass, spotting on dishes out of the dishwasher, soap and shampoo that will not lather properly, stiff laundry, and a water heater that has not lasted as long as it should. If the test comes back only moderately hard, we will tell you a softener may not be worth it.
Does softened water taste salty?
No. Ion exchange leaves a small amount of sodium in the water, not salt in any tasteable sense, and the quantity is low compared with ordinary food. What people usually notice is that softened water feels different, slightly slippery, and that soap lathers far more readily. If sodium is a dietary concern, we can leave the kitchen cold tap unsoftened or pair the system with reverse osmosis for drinking water.
How much salt will it use?
That depends on your measured hardness, household water use, and how well the system is sized and programmed. A properly sized and correctly set unit for an average household typically needs a bag every four to eight weeks. A poorly sized or badly programmed one can double that, which is one of the clearest signs a system needs adjusting. We also offer scheduled salt delivery if carrying bags is not appealing.
My softener has stopped working. Is it worth repairing?
Usually yes. The two things that fail are the control valve and the resin bed, and both are serviceable. Control valves are repairable or replaceable without changing the whole system. Resin lasts roughly ten to fifteen years and can be replaced in the existing tank. Before either, we check for salt bridging in the brine tank, because a surprising share of dead softeners are actually just bridged.
Is the estimate really free?
Yes, and there is no obligation attached to it. We come out, diagnose the actual fault, and give you one flat price covering parts and labor before any work starts. If you decide not to book, you owe nothing and we will not chase you with follow-up calls. We would rather you had an honest number to compare than feel cornered into a decision at the door.
Do you guarantee the work?
Every job is backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee. If the same problem returns, call us and we come back out to make it right. We test our work before leaving rather than packing up the moment it looks finished, which is the main reason callbacks are rare. Parts and equipment carry their manufacturer warranty on top of our own guarantee.
